Why High Heels Are Bad for Your Feet

Wearing high heels on a regular basis is, quite frankly, bad for your feet. High heels wedge your feet and toes into awkward positions that can have long term unhealthy effects. By wearing high heels, your body weight is unnaturally forced into a small area at the front of the shoe which squishes your toes together and, depending on how narrow the toe box is, can force your toes into a bent or clawed position. Over time, this can shorten your tendons and make your joints rigid. This dysfunction can lead to foot deformities such as hammertoes (permanently bent, or clawed toes) and bunions (a bony bump on the outside of the foot) that causes a misalignment in the big toe. Wearing high heels places the bones that connect your ankle with your toes (metatarsals) at a severe angle which, along with your body weight shifted forward, can lead to nerve damage and pain. High heels tighten and thicken your tendons. They may also shorten your calf muscles, causing discomfort and strain, and may lead to plantar fasciitis (heel pain). High heels change your center of gravity, which may lead to ankle instability and increase your chances of injury. If you are experiencing any condition or pain caused by wearing high heels, it is a good idea to contact your local podiatrist.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.

Types of Ankle Sprains

When you sprain an ankle, it means that a ligament that connects the ankle bone to the foot and provides joint stability, has been over-stretched and torn. Depending on the severity of the injury, your ankle will swell and become inflamed, and bruising and discoloration will follow. Also, it hurts when you move the foot or put weight on it. The three grades of sprains are 1) mild stretching of the ligament with no joint instability, 2) partial tear with little or no instability, and 3) rupture of ligament with loss of stability. Lateral sprains are the most common, caused when the outside of the foot rolls over, thereby stretching the ligament. Less common is a sprain along the inner side of the ankle (known as a high-ankle or syndesmotic sprain). This type of sprain involves ligaments that attach to the tibia and fibula bones of the lower leg. It occurs when the foot is twisted, usually during a sports activity, such as football, hockey or skiing. If you think you have sprained an ankle, it is a good idea to stay off it for 72 hours, while also applying ice, wrapping it to keep down the swelling, and elevating it while sitting. If symptoms worsen, it is suggested that you seek professional help from a podiatrist for a complete diagnosis and treatment plan.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive disease that causes the body’s immune system to mistakenly attack healthy tissue. RA can break down cartilage between bones in the ankle. Without healthy cartilage between ankle bones, bones rub together and cause friction that can lead to inflammation and pain in the ankle joint. In addition, RA can also weaken surrounding tissues that normally support and stabilize the ankle. Over time, the damage RA inflicts on the ankle can change how the joint functions and may lead to further destruction. A podiatrist can diagnose RA in your ankles and help determine the best course of treatment, which may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, custom orthotics, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

When Is Toenail Surgery an Option?

Many rheumatoid arthritis sufferers find that ingrown toenails have become an ongoing problem. An ingrown toenail occurs when the outer edge of the nail gets embedded in the surrounding skin. This can cause pain, swelling, and possibly an infection. If this happens regularly, surgery to remove the nail may be an option to consider. If you still have a good blood supply to the feet and toes, and if you are not currently having a rheumatoid flare-up, removal of the toenail is a viable option. Surgery, which can be carried out by a podiatrist, is a long-term solution. But it’s important to remember that because of rheumatoid arthritis the healing process may be slow. Other options can include changing your footwear to a larger size and seeing a podiatrist to set up a series of regular foot-care appointments as a preventative measure.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

What Causes Bunions?

A bunion is a bumpy outgrowth that develops at the joint of the big toe as a result of a deformity known as hallux valgus. The most common symptom is the big toe pushing inward toward the second toe, thereby pushing the joint out of alignment and causing the bump. The main cause is wearing shoes that are pointy or too tight in the toe box. Tight shoes strain the MTP (metatarsophalangeal) joint where the big toe meets the foot. Women are more likely to develop bunions because they often wear high heels.  A bunion can also be the result of heredity or arthritis. If you have developed a bunion, it is wise to consult with a podiatrist earlier rather than later. The podiatrist can examine the area and help you decide the correct measures to take. Treatment ranges from elastic bunion pads or shoe inserts in minor cases to surgery in the most severe.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery
