Hammer Toes

What causes hammertoes?

Hammertoes are toe deformities that affect the middle joint of your smaller toes. Mallet toes, which are similar, affect the joint nearest your toenail. In either case, the underlying issue is a soft tissue imbalance.

Normally, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work together to help your toe bend and then bounce right back into a straighter alignment.

If your smaller toes are always scrunched up though, like to fit into your snug shoes, your connective tissues are retrained to get used to this new abnormal bend.

Over time, muscles, tendons, and ligaments can no longer keep your toe straight and, instead, make it stay bent on a regular basis. In advanced hammertoe stages, your toe gradually starts to stiffen and become rigid without proper treatment.

Ill-fitting footwear isn’t the only cause of hammertoes though. You can also develop them if you have:

  • Bunions
  • A family history of hammertoes
  • Smaller toes that are longer than your big toe
  • Arthritic conditions, especially rheumatoid arthritis

Toe injury or trauma, even something as simple as stubbing your toe, can lead to hammertoe formation, too.

When should I see a podiatrist for hammertoes?

The highly skilled practitioners at Boca Raton Podiatry encourage you to come in as soon as you start noticing hammertoes forming, since they’re progressive (like bunions) and worsen over time.

You should also come into the clinic for a hammertoe evaluation if you’re experiencing any of the following issues in one or more of your toes:

  • Redness
  • Painful corns
  • Abnormal bend
  • Tenderness or swelling
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion

Boca Raton Podiatry provides in-office digital X-ray services, so you can get properly diagnosed on the spot and start a treatment plan often the same day.

Is there an effective hammertoe treatment?

Yes. With the help of Boca Raton Podiatry, you can get relief from agonizing hammertoe discomfort and restore your normal foot function.

After examining you and looking at any necessary images, your dedicated podiatrist may recommend trying one or more of the following solutions:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Footwear modifications
  • Padding, taping, and splinting
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

For seriously painful or deformed hammertoes, your podiatrist could recommend minimally invasive surgery.

Hammertoe surgery from Boca Raton Podiatry can include releasing rigid tendons or remodeling bones. For more complex hammertoes, your podiatrist may need to remove some of your bone or fuse bones together to realign your toe joint.
