Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that bind and support the ankle joint become stretched beyond their limits. Having good balance as well as strength and flexibility in your feet, ankles, and lower legs can help prevent ankle sprains from occurring. Stretching your calf muscles before and after engaging in physical activity is important. From a standing position with your hands (at arm’s length) placed on a table or a wall, put one leg behind you. Keeping both heels on the ground, lean forward gently until you feel the stretch in your calf muscles. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then repeat the stretch with your other leg behind you. A podiatrist can provide additional stretching techniques and ankle strengthening exercises that can be applied in combination with other preventative measures to help you avoid a sprained ankle. These methods can also help to heal a sprained ankle should one occur.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Why Are My Toenails Thick?

Thickened toenails are typically a sign of a fungal toenail infection, which can cause changes in the texture and color of the toenail. An infected toenail can often thicken, become brittle or crumbly, and develop white, yellow, or brown discoloration. But while fungal infections are the most common cause of thickened toenails, they are not the only cause. Psoriasis, a skin condition, can also affect the toenails, making them thicker, pitted, and discolored. Paronychia, a nail disease caused by a bacterial infection, can thicken the toenail, make it discolored, and cause redness, pain, and inflammation around the nail. Diabetes can cause toenails to thicken because not enough nutrients are reaching the toenails to maintain their health. Other reasons your toenails may be thickened include onychogryphosis (Ram’s Horn), aging, a toenail injury, or a rare condition called yellow nail syndrome. If you notice changes in the thickness, color, or shape of your toenails, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

Signs of a Heel Spur

Heel spurs are bony growths that protrude from underneath the heel bone. While heel spurs often form alongside plantar fasciitis, they can also form on their own. Either way, heel spurs do have similar symptoms to plantar fasciitis. These symptoms include pain and tenderness under the heel (particularly while bearing weight), pain that is worse in the mornings, and worsening symptoms while running or walking. Heel spurs are generally only discovered through X-rays. They can be very painful, but they also may not be noticed at all. As the fat pad under the heel wears out, heel spurs tend to become more painful. Patients who are struggling with heel pain should consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis of their pain.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from Boca Raton Podiatry . Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Because the foot supports the body and is made up of a complex network of bones, ligaments and tendons, foot pain can be debilitating and needs medical care. Different conditions can lead to issues in different locations on the foot. Common issues that cause pain on the top of the foot include extensor tendonitis, a Lisfranc injury, a midtarsal joint sprain, a navicular stress fracture, or a Morton’s neuroma. While these injuries are all different and complex, there are a few indications that a podiatrist should examine your condition. These indications include severe pain and swelling, an inability to complete normal daily tasks or to put weight on the foot, a change in sensation of the foot (such as numbness), and pain and weakness in the area that lasts more than two weeks.
